GRAYBAR OFFERS CABLING CLIENTS ETL VERIFICATION
New "VIP" Program Provides Clients with Expanded List of Products, Third-Party Verified Performance Data, and Field Testing of High-Speed Networks
Clayton, Mo., August 24, 1999 -- Graybar, the leading national independent distributor of communications and data products, today announced it is joining forces with Intertek Testing Services (ITS), the world's largest product and commodities testing organization, to offer an industry-unique initiative, called the Verified Independently for Performance (VIP) program. Through third-party testing, the VIP program verifies cabling manufacturers' product performance claims, both in a controlled laboratory setting and, if the customer wishes, in the field.
For Graybar, the VIP program provides independent testing of the cabling systems it distributes -- above and beyond standard, pre-market cabling safety and performance testing requirements. In turn, ETL-verified cabling systems and components tested by ITS laboratories and its field engineers will provide Graybar's clients with third-party verification of top performance for mission-critical applications running within high-speed networks. 0.
"Graybar's VIP program is providing our clients with the value-added service of independent verification that cabling systems, in part or as a whole, meet the more demanding transmission requirements necessary in data communications today," said Dennis DeSousa, vice president, Comm/Data Marketing, Graybar.
The VIP testing regimen is based on random product samplings from Graybar's 260 U.S. locations -- products that have been tested to industry standards and national product performance and safety standards using the latest equipment by the ITS/ETL Wire and Cable laboratory in Cortland, N.Y. The ITS/ETL equipment is capable of testing out to 1.3 GHz, exceeding the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) requirement for testing to 100 MHz for Gigabit Ethernet connections.
The VIP program consists of two testing options for verified cabling systems.
  • VIP1000 tests systems from cabling and connectivity manufacturers to determine if those connections will provide end users with sufficient performance to run high-speed networks (measurements are based on the proposed TIA/EIA Category 5e channel specification). In addition, this classification examines improved transmission characteristics that provide more headroom and more bandwidth for future applications, without end users having to reinstall updated cable and/or connections.
  • VIP2000 tests for higher speeds and additional frequencies to provide similar headroom beyond the IEEE standard for cabling systems designed to work within the Category 6 TIA/EIA.
Established in 1869, Graybar, a Fortune 500, employee-owned company, is the leading national independent distributor of communications and data products. Representing thousands of manufacturers in the United States, Graybar distributes more than 800,000 different products and components while investing time and resources dedicated to providing valuable distribution services for both manufacturers and customers alike.
